Bahamas
Sun, sea, beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, palm trees and sunsets. What could be more romantic than a holiday in the Bahamas. The Bahamas are the ideal place for couples, whether it is a honeymoon, Valentine holiday or simply a romantic vacation for two. It is also the ideal location for a romantic wedding.
History of the Bahamas
The southern islands of the Bahamas remained uninhabited until the 7th century when they occupied by the Taino people from Hispaniloa and Cuba. These people became known as the Lucayans.
The Lucayan people were the sole occupants of the Bahamas until Christopher Columbus set foot on San Salvador Island in 1492. It was not long before the Spaniards arrived. Their arrival lead to many of the indigenous people being carried off into slavery.
In 1670 King Charles II granted the islands to the Lords Proprietors of the Carolinas and during this time piracy was rife amongst the Bahamas including the notorious English pirate, Blackbeard.
Piracy was finally eliminated after a large struggle by Woodes Rogers when the Bahamas were made into a crown colony in 1718.
In 1807 slavery was abolished in England and many Africans were freed by the Royal Navy and settled in the Bahamas.
Geography of the Bahamas
The Bahamas are a group of islands located in the romantic setting of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The group consist of 29 islands, 661 ceys and 2,387 islets. Only 30 to 40 are inhabited, making an excellent choice for a romantic getaway.
Climate of the the Bahamas
The Bahamas has a tropical climate with the highest average rainfall falling in June and the lowest average rainfall falling in December. The average highest temperature is in July and August and the lowest average temperature is in January, February and December. Average temperatures range from 70°F (21°C) to 82°F (28°C). Humidity can be high.
